We propose reconstructing the section of Peterburi Road between Mustakivi Road and Väo Road by replacing the worn concrete slab pavement with modern asphalt, improving road safety, driving comfort and the quality of one of Tallinn’s main gateways.
The section of Peterburi Road between Mustakivi Road and Väo Road is one of the last major road sections in Tallinn that still uses a concrete slab pavement. After decades of heavy use, the surface has deteriorated significantly, resulting in unevenness, wheel ruts and height differences at slab joints.
After rainfall, water frequently accumulates in the ruts, increasing the risk of hydroplaning. During winter, icy ruts can reduce vehicle stability and increase the risk of traffic accidents. The uneven pavement also generates additional noise and vibration.
This road section is used daily by passenger cars, freight vehicles, public transport and long-distance buses. Although other parts of Peterburi Road have been reconstructed in recent years, this section no longer meets modern expectations for road safety, driving comfort and infrastructure quality.
Peterburi Road is one of the main routes into Tallinn for people arriving from Narva, Rakvere and the wider North-Eastern Estonia region. Therefore, the condition of this road affects not only traffic safety but also the first impression of the capital city.
